What Folks Ask

Is home birth safe?

For low-risk pregnancies with proper screening and ongoing care, home birth can be a safe option. Your eligibility is determined through prenatal assessments and ongoing monitoring.

Who attends a home birth?

Typically a licensed midwife and assistant(s). A trained birth team is present to monitor both parent and baby and provide support throughout labor, birth, and immediate postpartum care.

What happens if there is an emergency during home birth?

Midwives are trained to identify complications early and respond immediately. If a situation requires higher-level care, emergency protocols are activated and transfer to a hospital occurs.

Do you have emergency equipment on hand?

Yes. Midwives carry essential emergency equipment and medications appropriate for out-of-hospital birth care, based on scope of practice and state regulations. In Alabama, licensed midwives carry essential supplies for monitoring and supporting birth, which may include:

  • Blood pressure equipment

  • Fetal monitoring tools

  • Sterile birth supplies

  • Postpartum hemorrhage medications (within scope and protocol)

  • Oxygen and resuscitation equipment

  • Basic newborn assessment tools

What if I have a “high-risk” label?

That depends on what the actual medical situation is. Some conditions can still be supported in midwifery care, and others may require referral or collaboration with other providers.

How do I get started?

It usually begins with a consultation or intake conversation so we can see if we’re a good fit.
